CBD Oil for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Symptoms

Can CBD be used to attain relief from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) symptoms? Using CBD oil for MS is becoming a hot topic in today’s increasing medical and recreational marijuana landscape. Cannabis has been proven to possess a number of healing benefits for various physical and psychological conditions, and the FDA has even sanctioned the production of the first cannabis-based medication, Epidiolex, for the treatment of childhood epilepsy. It’s not hard to understand why turning to CBD for MS symptoms is a popular topic.

Both cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are two of the many naturally occurring chemical compounds found in cannabis and have the ability to offer symptom relief for a wide variety of ailments, with new research findings emerging on a regular basis to support the efficacy of cannabis in offering this relief. CBD does not contain the psychoactive properties of THC, and therefore can deliver relief without the “high” typically associated with marijuana use. CBD is present in marijuana in small amounts, but it is also present in much larger quantities in hemp. Anecdotal evidence also mounts daily in support of both THC and CBD for symptom relief.

What are common MS symptoms?

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the brain and spinal cord, and as such can present with anything from simple fatigue to immediate paralysis. The most common symptoms are sensory, such as a sensation of “pins and needles”, visual disturbance in one eye, burning or electric sensations, weakness of the arms or legs, and imbalance. MS symptoms usually display gradually and last for a few weeks the first time they present. In most cases memory issues, fatigue, and bladder problems occur later.

Although the root cause of Multiple Sclerosis is still unknown even after years of research, it is thought to be precipitated by an overactive immune system which turns on the body’s own tissue. This causes damage to the nerves in the brain and spinal cord which then results in altered sensation, vision, and balance, and often a lack of muscle strength. Research has yet to determine if the disease is genetic, caused by infection, environmental factors, or a combination of all three.

Taking CBD for MS symptoms may provide relief for some people, but as each individual is unique, there are no guarantees or current research to support that the benefit one person derives from using CBD for MS will be achieved by another individual.

Can CBD Oil for MS Reduce Symptoms?

People with MS will benefit from a healthy lifestyle. People with MS typically experience more fatigue and have less energy reserves, so being as healthy as possible is the best defense. Maintaining a balanced diet with more fish and vegetables and less red meat is recommended, and vitamin D supplements may help. The recommended dosage is from 2000 to 10,000 international units per day, but as always you should check with your doctor before beginning any new supplement or routine. Should this include using CBD for MS Symptoms? Here’s what people are saying about specifically using CBD oil for MS.

Research does show some good news for those with MS symptoms causing mobility issues. A 2018 study titled “Cannabidiol to Improve Mobility in People with Multiple Sclerosis” stated; ‘There is evidence that CBD has a number of beneficial pharmacological effects (45). It is anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiemetic, antipsychotic, and neuroprotective. The review of 132 original studies by Bergamaschi et al. (6) describes the safety profile of CBD by highlighting that catalepsy is not induced and physiological parameters (heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature) are not altered. Moreover, psychomotor and psychological functions are not negatively affected. High doses of up to 1,500 mg per day and chronic use have been repeatedly shown to be well tolerated by humans (6). Additionally, there is also evidence that CBD may reduce the negative psychotropic effects, memory impairment, and appetite stimulation, anxiety and psychotic-like states of THC while enhancing its positive therapeutic actions (78).’

The study goes on to report that; ‘It is suggested that recent increases in the social acceptance of CBD will lead to increases in the number of PwMS (people with MS) using cannabis to treat their symptoms. Anecdotal reports indicate that an increasing number of PwMS use cannabis (medical marijuana) as a supplement to improve their mobility. Based on the following considerations, it is our opinion that CBD supplementation maybe advisable for PwMS to reduce fatigue, pain, spasticity, and ultimately improve mobility. The benefits related to cannabis use in PwMS are still under investigation. However, data indicates that cannabis, with 1:1 or greater CBD:THC ratio, reduces muscle spasticity (11) and pain in PwMS (12). The American Academy of Neurology (13) has highlighted cannabis’ safety profile as well as these benefits. However, there are currently no studies, which investigated the effects of cannabis on mobility in PwMS, some studies have suggested that cannabinoids may exert positive effects on health by decreasing inflammation and decreasing pain (6). Furthermore, inflammation plays an important role in the generation of MS related fatigue (14).’

Although the research which does exist regarding using CBD for MS symptoms is promising, it is not yet totally conclusive. Further research is necessary and anticipated to increase to a large degree once cannabis is no longer considered a Schedule I drug by the federal government.

How Does CBD Oil for MS Patients Work?

CBD interacts with the receptors found in the endocannabinoid system present in the central nervous system of every human. This interaction has the potential to result in positive effects such as increased flexibility, reduced muscle and joint pain, reduced headaches and migraines, reduced spasticity, and reduced overall pain. There are also potentially negative side effects some individuals may experience, including:

  • digestive issues, including upset stomach or nausea
  • drowsiness
  • headaches, especially when taking higher doses
  • lung irritation and coughing when smoking or vaping

These side effects may dissipate with time as the patient’s body becomes accustomed to the presence of CBD in his or her system. Many of the potential long-term effects of CBD for MS symptoms are unknown at this time, due to the newness of legalization and lack of long-term studies. It is also still unclear whether CBD use has an effect on hormones, which raises concerns surrounding CBD use in developing teenagers. There is a definite need for additional research to discover and document the potential side effects in these areas. Purity of product is also a consideration, as regulations are still being developed. Experts recommend that consumers always the lowest possible dosage when taking CBD oil for MS or other symptoms in light of the fact that there are no current guidelines on the effective dosages for CBD for MS symptoms or other products.
