Cancer is a potentially deadly disease that affects millions of people every year. Symptoms of the disease are varied, but often include chronic pain, stiff muscles and joints, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, lethargy, loss of appetite, disorientation, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Can treatment with Cannabidiol or CBD help relieve these cancer symptoms? According to both studies and anecdotal evidence, it can.
A 2019 study on the Potential Use of Cannabinoids for the Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer published in the Journal of Pancreatic Cancer showed that cannabinoids such as CBD may be an effective adjunct for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The study noted that ‘pancreatic cancer is the fourth major cause of cancer death and is likely to become the second major cause of cancer death after lung cancer by 2030, with an urgent need to improve treatment outcomes.’ Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural method of treating this disease that deserves more in-depth research.
Another study published in 2014 studied the effect of CBD botanical drug substance (CBD BDS), on colorectal cancer cell proliferation and in experimental models of colon cancer in vivo. The study concluded that “CBD BDS attenuates (reduces the force, effect, or value of) colon carcinogenesis and inhibits colorectal cancer cell proliferation via CB1 and CB2 receptor activation. The results may have some clinical relevance for the use of Cannabis-based medicines in cancer patients.”
CBd oil for cancer patients
How does cbd oil work for cancer patients?
There is no evidence at present to support the notion that CBD can cure cancer, however there is much anecdotal evidence to support the research that shows cancer patients may be able to achieve significant relief of their symptoms through the use of CBD oil and other products. Many cancer patients report that cannabinoids like CBD can be helpful for the nausea, vomiting and neuropathy associated with both cancer and cancer treatments. Many others report that the anxiety, depression, and insomnia that can accompany cancer and cancer treatment are relieved through the use of CBD.
The FDA did approve one CBD product — the drug Epidiolex in 2018 — for the treatment of two conditions (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome) related to epilepsy, but to date no CBD product has been approved by the FDA for any other medical purpose, including to treat cancer, its symptoms, or the side effects caused by its treatment. CBD should not be considered a substitute for other cancer treatment. If you are using CBD Oil to help alleviate cancer-related symptoms or side effects, it’s important to let your doctor know, as CBD can interfere with the metabolizing of certain medications.
